You may not need a smart meter

Citizens Advice reports that energy suppliers are using aggressive or misleading sales practices to install smart meters.

A smart meter can automatically send daily meter readings to your supplier, meaning they can bill you accurately for the energy you’ve used. You don’t have to accept a smart meter if you don’t want one. If your supplier tells you that you must have one installed, contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.

Energy companies have been accused of claiming that the meters are a legal requirement, or sending engineers to properties where occupants have already refused smart meters.

Victoria MacGregor, head of energy at Citizens Advice, said: "We appreciate suppliers are under pressure to install more meters but they have a responsibility to act reasonably toward their customers and not to use misleading or aggressive sales practices."
